That were you doing 9 years ago?
January '97: I was a sophomore in highschool. That year I was president of the environmental club, and being the overachiever I had decided to do an Earth Day festival in April. There were only 6 members in the club, also HS students, and it was a pretty complicated event, now that I look back on it. There were going to be 4 bands, and there were local poets that were going to read between the band setups- and they all were going to perform for free. Even the venue, the Center for Symbolic Studies had let me use their grounds for free. I also ended up joining a local environmental action goup and they were going to provide food. There were some friends of mine and some Woodstock vendors who were going to sell Earth Day crafts and handmade stuff. It was really intense because the other kids weren't organized with their time to help out, and I'm sure I was bossy, so it was a lot of work for me. It ended up getting rained out, and although I had the bands and poets reserved to go again the next weekend, The Center forgot to tell me some healer was coming, and we couldn't use the grounds. I get dissapointed when I think back on this, and I wonder how it would have turned out. Part of me feels like there wasn't enough press and no one would have shown up, but I could be totally wrong. You never know. Maybe it's better that it never happened at all. I leared a lot in the process, and ended up producing more events thereafter that were very successful, but never anything as complicated.
I guess it's no surprise that I work in production now, huh.
What were you doing 6 years ago?
January
2000. After 6 months I moved from Manhattan to Long Island City, Queens. While the room was 3x as big and the rent was only $625, my roomate was not so good. He was really dirty and anti-social. I was probably starting my 2nd semester at Hunter, and already knew it would be time to transfer.
Also at this time, I met the kid (Jake) that would be my supplement employment for the next 5 years- babysitting. I went to buy a rug for my new apartment, in a store where Jake's mom worked. His babysitter had just left and he was hanging out at the store with his mom. We struck up a conversation, and next thing I knew she asked me wat I was doing Friday night. Jake was 4 then. He's 10 now, and I still see him now and then.
What were you doing one hour ago?
Putting Anni-Ming to bed. See I'm still babysiting! I'm helping her make a scarf for her mom, so we were knitting in bed together for a awhile. I've got her on size 15's so it won't take so long. She's 10. I really like her.
Name 3 movies/tv program you can't turn off if you stumble across them on television:
- Anything on Food Network
- Dance movies like FlashDance or Fast Forward
- I can't think of a third, I don't watch a lot of tv
Name 3 things you want to improve upon this year:
- pay myself (save money)
- the length of my commute (I gotta move a little closer)
- the bingo arm
Name 3 things you can't live without:
aside from knitting?
- kale
- Stevie Wonder
- my kiddies
Name 3 things you could...
- I would make all utility servies give you a specific hour that they are going to come to your house, and they have to pay you if they miss the appointment. No more 9-12 or 1-6 option!
- Hassidic people friendlier
- give everyone longer vacations so they can travel and relax.
Name 3 things you really like about yourself.
- my name, I got 5 Virginia's in the family, you know? It's not one you hear everyday.
- I really like children and I think I'm lucky that I can bond with them and they trust me. I have a lot of fun with kids and I think I'm going to be an ass kicking mom someday in the far far future.
- I like that I bring people together.
Flashdance...hmm I never took you for a flashdance kinda gal...you see you never know until you do a meme!
